The King’s (Liverpool Regiment)
The King’s (Liverpool Regiment), one of the British Army’s oldest and most distinguished infantry regiments, played a prominent role in World War I, raising 49 battalions and serving with valor across the Western Front, Gallipoli, and other theaters. Based in Liverpool, the regiment’s regular, territorial, and volunteer units fought in major battles including Mons, Ypres, the Somme, and Passchendaele, earning numerous battle honors and Victoria Crosses for acts of bravery. Known for their tenacity, the “King’s Men” endured the horrors of trench warfare, high casualty rates, and grueling conditions, participating in both offensive assaults and defensive stands. Their strong regional identity, rooted in Liverpool’s working-class communities, fostered camaraderie and resilience, making the regiment a vital component of the British Expeditionary Force. The King’s (Liverpool Regiment) exemplified the courage and sacrifice of Britain’s infantry, contributing significantly to the war effort despite the immense human cost.
