Corporation Cottages – Vernon Rd

1934
Corporation Cottages

I can’t be certain where the corporation cottages stood. But Vernon Road was a residential area, possibly connected to the prominent Vernon family, historically significant in Cheshire and Derbyshire. The Vernons were influential landowners, with ties to the region dating back to the Norman Conquest. For instance, Richard Vernon was a knight under William the Conqueror, ruling over manors in Cheshire, and by the 18th century, the Vernon family owned lands and coal mines in nearby Poynton. While no direct link ties the Vernon family to naming Vernon Road in Chesterfield, the recurrence of the Vernon name in the region suggests possible influence or commemoration.
